Beginning Legal Secretary Course
In its commitment to further the education of the Sacramento legal community, SLSA conducts at least one, if not two, nine-week Beginning Legal Secretary Courses per year. These courses are taught by guest speakers and qualified members of SLSA who usually have obtained their California Certified Legal Secretary certification and have worked in law offices for at least ten years. The courses include one night of class per week (two hours per night) and are designed for the legal secretary-to-be with little or no experience but who are currently working in a law office or law-related office, or the experienced secretary needing refresher courses. The courses are instructed with the use of the Law Office Procedures Manual, which is written by members of LSI and published by The Rutter Group. The courses cover: Introduction to the Law Office; Legal Citations; Roles of the Legal Personnel; Calendaring and Time Posting; Preparation and Service of Legal Documents; Court Systems/Structure/Rules of Court; Legal Terminology; and Statutes of Limitation, Timetables.
The 2010 Beginning Legal Secretary Course will be taught this year by Desiree Delonia, CCLS. The classes will commence on August 2 through the end of September, 2010 and will be held at the law offices of Somach Simmons & Dunn, 500 Capitol Mall, Suite 1000, Sacramento, CA 95814.

- Week 3: August 16 – Introduction to Legal Research/Citations
- Week 4: August 23 – Discovery Procedures
- Week 5: August 30 – Civil Litigation Procedures
- Week 6: September 6 – Pretrial Procedures/ADR
- Week 7: September 13 – Litigation Calendaring/Docketing
- Week 8: September 20 – Review
- Week 9: September 27 – Final Exam

Grammar Gregg's Way
In its commitment to further the education of the Sacramento legal community, and to assist those who are studying for the California Certified Legal Secretary exam, SLSA will be offering monthly evening grammar courses. The classes will be structured around The Gregg Reference Manual. Students will learn business English, Gregg's way.
Classes will be held once a month in the evening on the first Wednesday of each month from August 2010 until March 2011. The instructor for these courses is Sherri Lee Caplette, CCLS. Ms. Caplette is not only a past president of SLSA, a California Certified Legal Secretary, an office administrator, but also has extensive knowledge in practical use of grammar using The Gregg Reference Manual.
The grammar classes will be held at the law offices of Fagen Friedman & Fulfrost, LLP, 520 Capitol Mall, Suite 400, Sacramento, CA 95814.

August 4, 2010 – The structure of a sentence part 1: subjects, predicates, verbs, adverbs, pronouns, conjunctions, clauses, participles, and proofreaders' marks. |
| Lesson 2: |
September 1, 2010 – The structure of a sentence part 2: subjects, predicates, verbs, adverbs, pronouns, conjunctions, clauses, participles, present and past tense. |
| Lesson 3: |
October 6, 2010 – Periods, question marks, exclamation points, semicolons, colons, commas, and conjunctions. |
| Lesson 4: |
November 3, 2010 – Capitalization; nouns: people, places, and things; titles of literary and artistic works; headings; numbers; abbreviations; acronyms and initialisms. |
| Lesson 5: |
December 1, 2010 – Singular and plural usage; possessives; spelling; choosing the right word; dissecting a word; synonyms; and, antonyms. |
| Lesson 6: |
January 5, 2011 – Compound words; prefixes and suffixes; word division; and, using the hyphen in compounds and word division. |
| Lesson 7: |
February 2, 2011 – Quotations; italics and underlining; other marks of punctuation. |
| Lesson 8: |
March 2, 2011 – Letters, memos, and e-mail; reports and manuscripts; notes and bibliographies; editing and proofreading tips. |

California Certified Legal Secretary Study Group
The Sacramento Legal Secretaries Association is pleased to announce a lunchtime CCLS study group course. This CCLS study course is designed for the intermediate to advanced legal secretary. This class is fast paced, intense, and requires a personal commitment to individual reading and examination preparation. Beginning legal secretary knowledge is required. A minimum of 2 years' full-time legal secretary experience prior to 2010 is required to take the CCLS exam. This course will be instructed with the use of the Law Office Procedures Manual, Legal Professionals Handbook, and The Gregg Reference Manual. NOTE: You MUST have a Law Office Procedures Manual and a California Style Manual prior to the commencement of the class. Books are not included in the price of the course.
